Astronomers landed in space without the spacecraft

Wits Planetarium Grade 3

The long- awaited day finally came. As we queued outside, waiting for the right time, it was interesting to watch so many curious faces from different schools preparing to explore Space.

As we entered the Planetarium, the day light suddenly changed to a pitch- black night. All we could see were the glazing stars in the sky that formed; a scorpion, a lion and an upside- down question mark. We watched all this in awe. It was an amazing discovery.

  • Finally, we landed on the planets. The young astronomers were ready with their notepads to record their findings. They were all ears, as the director explained some facts about the planets, such as the following;
  • Mercury is the fastest planet and closest to the sun.
  • Venus was named after a morning star, 480 degrees hotter.
  • In Mars there is no sign of life but all frozen water on the ground.
  • Jupiter has many mountains that look like human faces.
  • Saturn is a gas planet with pieces of ice everywhere.

Just to mention a few.

We also studied Pluto, a dwarf planet. The researchers who went to explore Pluto, took almost ten years to get there. It was concluded that it is not a real planet.

The young scientists had this to say about the Planetarium!!!!!

  • I enjoyed every minute at the Planetarium – Unathi Nkomo.
  • I was amazed at the awesome wonders of the Universe – Makanaka Dehwa.
  • I felt like a real Astronomer – Tania Bie.
  • I loved the dome shape of the Planetarium, looking up the sky, seeing the stars made it appear real Natalie Chingono.
  • It was worth every cent I paid – Amos Bonga.

If only we could turn back the clock. # the view is still vivid. Thumbs-up!! to our parents and our principal, for making this tour possible for us.
