On 25 June 2026, our Grade 6 learners traded their usual classroom desks for a journey millions of years back in time! The destination? Maropeng, the visitor centre for the world-famous Cradle of Humankind.
The day was packed with discovery as the learners explored interactive exhibits detailing the origins of Earth, the formation of fossils, and how human ancestors lived. But if you ask the Grade 6s to pick the ultimate highlight of the day, the answer is unanimous: the underground boat ride! Floating Through 4 Billion Years Before stepping into the main exhibition hall, learners boarded custom boats for an immersive, subterranean trip back through time. The dark, atmospheric water tunnel simulated:
- The formation of the Earth from cosmic dust.
- The power of the four main elements: Water, Air, Fire, and Ice.
- Ice Age glaciers melting into raging ancient rivers.
Glowing, vortex-like visual effects that made everyone feel like true time travelers. Screams of excitement and wide eyes filled the tunnel as the boats drifted through ice, fire, and giant tumbling water drops before emerging into the modern world. Becoming Young Paleontologists After drying off, the Grade 6s got down to business inspecting real fossils, ancient stone tools, and full-scale replicas of early hominin skeletons like Mrs. Ples and Little Foot. Did You Know? The Cradle of Humankind contains some of the oldest hominin fossils ever found on Earth, dating back over 2 to 3 million years—and it's right in our backyard! A Day to Remember
The excursion was a massive success, giving our learners a deeper appreciation for history, science, and the wonders of South Africa's rich heritage.
