Grade 2 SPOILS WITH SOILS

A topic and theme we had started online, our Grade 2’s now had the chance to practically understand the different types of soils which we had been learning about, namely sand, clay, and loam soil.

Using our senses, we learned about, the different colours, textures, and smells of the various soils. The activity carried out made them understand how the different types of soils differed in texture, colour, and in how they hold water. Using touch and sight, the Grade 2s learned how soil is formed from rocks, they learned that sand soil is gritty and as such it cannot store up much water while on the other hand clay soil is smooth and becomes sticky when in contact with water hence not ideal for most plants.  Our learners got to understand that when sand soil is mixed with clay soil it forms loam soil. The Grade 2s understood that loam soil is the best type of soil for growing plants as it holds enough water to make the plants grow beautifully. Our learners were so eager to feel each soil’s texture and WOWED to the activity.

We concluded the activity by drawing the layers of soil in their workbooks. Stunning pictures were drawn. As we always say in our classes “LIFE SKILLS IS FUN!” Our Grade 2s cannot wait to explore their next topic.
Thumbs up to our teachers for summing up our Life Skills theme on “SOIL” in such an enjoyable way.
