Swing, swing, swing, swing brought the sound of the Roaring Twenties to the launch of CityKidz AI Robotics Centre on 6 February 2025.
Delightful Grade 3 flappers and sheikhs shimmied and swayed. Grade 6 and 7 robot dancers heralded the seismic shifts in technology of the 20th and 21st century. From floppy disks to the virtual cloud, now coding, robotics and artificial intelligence has arrived.
Designed to inspire young minds and foster a passion for technology and innovation, CityKidz AI Robotics Centre is a cutting-edge facility. It marks a significant step forward in equipping learners with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The Robotics Centre, funded through the generous support of AFHCO, SA Corp and Simca from SMD Technologies.
Mrs De La Rey from FNB will be delighted to know that their donation of computers from FNB has been put to such good use and will be benefitting our learners. A special thanks to Chris Bruyns from JRA who donated the traffic lights. Our centre features state-of-the-art equipment: a bespoke robot that doubles up as the teacher’s desk and storage; colourful track flooring; 3D printers; seating that slot into a wall cupboard and desks that fold vertically; Lego wallpaper and much more.
At the opening ceremony, Sharon Reynolds, the principal, emphasised the importance of integrating technology into the curriculum. "Our Robotics Centre is not just about teaching children how to use technology; it's about encouraging creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. We want our learners to be the innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow." Renney Plit, director, outlined the vision for the future and treated guests to a preview of how CityTeenz and the surrounding area will be developed. He thanked the organisations and supporters of CityKidz, in particular, Jeppe Boys High School/FNB for the generous donation of computer equipment.
The launch of the Robotics Centre at CityKidz is just the beginning. The school has ambitious plans to expand its STEM curriculum in the coming years, including partnerships with University of Johannesburg and other tech organisations. By fostering a love of technology and innovation, the school hopes to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and inventors. As Kevin van den Heever of AFHCO cut the ribbon to declare the AI Robotics Centre open, it was clear that this initiative is more than just a new facility—it's a gateway to endless possibilities.
CityKidz is poised to become the school where innovators and leaders of tomorrow are produced.
