On the 12th of August, we received an unexpected surprise -a beautiful library on wheels! To our delight, we were informed that CityKidz Pre and Primary School had been selected out of 8000 applicants to be amongst the 1000 school beneficiaries of the Avbob Road to Literacy campaign for 2025!
Ma'am Cindy and Ma'am Tracy were thrilled beyond belief as they received a trolley library stocked with 500 CAPS aligned books, especially as they had worked together to apply for this competition. This prize is worth R57 000! We received brand new storybooks, atlases, dictionaries, graded readers and so much more. "I still can't believe it!" exclaimed ma'am Cindy as we circled the book shelf in awe. This application was submitted in the nick of time, amidst the busyness of writing reports and quite frankly, given the time elapsed we thought oh well, better luck next time! Only to be pleasantly surprised with such a wonderful gift for the children.
The application involved writing about CityKidz, its Inception and progress over the years, the involvement of parents and the community at large, and why we would be deserving to be a beneficiary. In the end, the application was a reflection of the love, dedication and inspiring vision that CityKidz has from its leaders, the passion and commitment of the teachers as well as the unwavering support from parents. If telling our story qualifies us to win such an amazing gift then: 1-we must be doing something right and 2- surely the sky is not the limit, but just the beginning for CityKidz!
Truly this library on wheels will go a long way to enriching our learners' lives and nurturing a love for reading. We are grateful to Avbob for giving our learners the opportunity to “live a thousand lives!" Ps. We even got an opportunity to show off our new library on wheels, to a delegation from the World Bank that visited our school on the 13th of August!
"One who reads, lives a thousand lives" Ma'am Cindy's favourite quote from George R.R. Martin - Author of the Game of Thrones, has become dream within reach for CityKidz.
