Grade 6 Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng

grade 6 sterkfontein caves

It all started on a chilly April morning. The learners arrived early in the dark, ready to be whisked away on an adventure that they will be forever grateful for. As the bus left, the light began to shine sharply through the clouds, illuminating the road ahead, as though casting protection over the learners and the day ahead.

As we arrived, we were greeted by our guides who took us under the surface to explore the caves. The caves were wet and dark, lit only by dim fluorescent bulbs. These entrances to the cave were dug up for archaeologists to uncover ancient beings, but it is now used to allow guests, like our learners, to gain access. We walked in the caves, discovering underwater lakes and shiny rocks and sediments. Stalactites, stalagmites, limestone, all of these terms were taught to our learners. As we resurfaced on the other side, we were greeted by a statue, and an important choice. Rub the cave’s founder’s nose for good luck or his hands for wisdom. The learners made their choice and returned to the busses.

After this, we were whisked away to the Maropeng Museum. Here, we got in boats and looked at the evolution of the planet and early man, enjoying every minute of it. Our learners were so wide-eyed and engaged.
What a wonderful trip! We look forward to the next one!
