Spelling Bee

The 2014 first CityKidz Annual Spelling Bee competition was held on Friday, August 22, 2014 in our School Hall. Ten learners from Grades 4-7 were selected - with 40 learners in total. The Spelling Bee lasted for 8 exciting rounds until there were only 2 spellers left in each grade. The elimination rounds were nerve wracking and a winner was declared in each Grade.

In Grade 4 the winner was Kgothatso Moloao. In Grade 5 Tawananyasha Kadango. In Grade 6 Nonsikelelo Dlamini and Grade 7 Luyanda Precious Dlamini.

We then decided to have an overall CityKidz Spelling Bee Champion and the four grade winners had to compete against each other.

The finalists went another 5 rounds before the winner was declared. Congratulations to the overall winner, Tawananyasha Kandango, in Grade 5.In order to win, she correctly spelled “corrugated” ( which had been incorrectly spelled by the other finalists) and then correctly spelled. Thanks to all our buzzy bees for learning their spelling words and all our Intersen staff for BEEing such stars. A special thanks to our Intersen Phase English teachers, Mr Nkomo and Mrs Tilly.

All Spelling Bee participants received certificates of participation and the brightest bees from each grade received a certificate and a book prize.

Spelling competitions help learners to improve their communicative skills by building an enhanced vocabulary, and through proper usage of the words are able to apply them in sentences. The CityKidz Spelling Bee was a resounding success. We intend having this competition every year.
