Spelling Bee 2022

What a buzzzzzz! We had our Spelling Bee this morning. It was incredibeely exciting...This was the first time the spelling bee has been held in person since 2019. It was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fifty Spellers -10 from Grade 4, 5 and 6 and 20 spellers from Grade 7 participated. The children were given several months to memorise the spelling bee words. Memorising spelling is not an easy walk in the park. It takes determination, grit, and perseverance! Learning the spellings of simple to difficult words is an important part of the school curriculum. It helps children to understand the meaning of words and helps in the pronunciation. Spelling bee is a competition in which the contestants are asked to spell different words varying in degrees of difficulty.

The Bee Masters announced the words slowly and clearly according to the word lists. The spellers listened carefully to the pronouncer, said the word loudly enough for the judge to hear it, and spelled each letter of the word. Spellers were eliminated when they misspelt a word and the last remaining three spellers had a "spell-off." to choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. It wasn’t easy to stand in a full hall and compete in front of their classmates and teachers. Luckily the audience were incredibly supportive and encouraging. All children received a participation certificate. Thank you to the English Department teachers for motivating the spellers, and to all the Intersen Phase teachers for assisting with the program.
