ANNUAL NATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Sunday, August 30, 2015 - 09:23

The ANNUAL NATIONAL ASSESSMENTS are only days away. These standardised tests will verify that every child in every school is developing the language and mathematics skills appropriate for the grade. These assessments are part of the normal curriculum and preparation happens during normal teaching time . We have however dedicated every Wednesday—the last two periods ( which was our extra mural time )to prepare for the ANA’s. Exemplar assessments will be used to inform teachers as to what extent the learners in their grades measure up to expectations. Learners are expected to complete all homework activities to ensure that they are ready for the ANA exams.

Tips for Parents to help their children prepare for the ANA’s:

  • Go through the Homework Sheets thoroughly. Assist and get involved with your child’s homework.
  • We have been using exemplars of previous ANA’s to familiarise  the children with the kinds of questions they can expect, you can help by consulting the Department of Education or the Thutong South African Educational Portal sites to obtain exemplars of  previous papers.
  • Go through the papers with your child and discuss possible answers to questions.
  • Constantly ask your child about the work covered in class and ask him/her to explain what work was covered to check if they understand concepts and content taught.

Tips for children to improve performance on the ANA’s:

  • Keep up with your studies. Always complete the weekly homework forms.
  • Complete all work in class.
  • When given exemplars in class pretend it is the actual ANA paper and follow the tips below:
    • Focus on one question at a time.
    • Read the directions and questions slowly and carefully.
    • Try to answer all questions. You will not be penalized for guessing.
    • Skip a question if you do not know the answer. Come back to the question after you finish the rest of the test.

It is imperative that all our Grade 6 learners pass the ANA’s. In addition to our Wednesday period we have been conducting  Annual National Assessment Saturday morning classes for the Grade 6’s. I was most pleased to see the turn out on Saturdays. Only a few learners have not attendeed. These Saturday classes provide invaluable support. Could parents please ensure children of the Grade 6 classes attend School on these days. I would like to thank all Grade 6 teachers for giving up their Saturday mornings to conduct these classes.
